Slightly old news but Shuggie's at the trailer park eatery on south 1st closed earlier this summer. According to the Austin Chronicle it closed because it was so hot that nobody wanted to come by their trailer.

I first visited Shuggie's about a year ago and thought it was pretty good. Winter came and I still thought about them periodically and decided to drive over to visit them since driving a warm car was better than walking through the cold sometimes. Anyway, I called them and their message said their hours and that if you called when they were open that they were too busy to answer the phone.

It was during business hours so I'd drove down there only to see that they were closed as I pulled into the parking lot. I turned around and went somewhere else. This happened several times. Finally I noticed a piece of paper in the window and it said they were closed for the winter. Well thanks for not changing your phone message and web site! I made at least 3 trips during the "winter" to find them closed.

Then I find out through the Austin Chronicle that they closed permanently in the summer because it was too hot and nobody was visiting.

That was too funny.

I'll miss them but not their business sense.

On a slightly different topic there are so many bars that don't put up a nice eye-catching neon sign until after they are successful. But with so many bars around anything you can do to stand out should help especially since during the daytime there's is a ton of foot traffic but a lot of cars driving around and the signs really help.

Was walking home and saw lights on at the former Gingerman building. So I whipped around to find a new place called Ghost being run by the Gingerman folks. They are doing live music and there's no telling how long they will be around. Check it out and pay your respects (again). It's a little odd seeing walls and so many other features gone. The real opening is Thursday so swing by and show some love.

Gables still owns the entire south half of the block off 4th between Guadalupe and Lavaca. It doesn't look likely that they be building on the site soon but things are bad enough that they may sell the lot. We'll see. I'm still disappointed that the historic status of the building did not prevent the demolition permit from being approved. It could be gone tomorrow.

Little Woodrow's took over the spot where the Texas Showdown was at for many years. I liked the Showdown for its simplicity and cheap beer happy hour. I don't know why they closed.

I've been a fan of Woodrow's since growing up in Houston and going to the Big Woodrow's on Chimney Rock and numerous Little Woodrow's. The one downtown is a great place and I can't believe it's been there for 6 years. I still remember the day it opened and it doesn't feel that long ago. Will and Ericka at the gang there sure knew how to make people feel at home.

The Little Woodrow's on 27th and the drag opened last Thanksgiving but I just made out there last week. I was in the mood for a walk so I hoofed the 22 blocks from my place downtown. It was only 98 that day but I was in the shade so it was fine. The place was pretty dead on a Monday at 7 but the students started coming in around 8:30. A pretty young girl got confused between pints and pitchers. Met an old guy that was interesting and had a good burger from the trailer out back appropriately called F'n Good Burgers.

Haven't been to the Little Woodrow's way south but am glad to see the small chain doing well and if memory serves it was started by a UT guy.

Very red. Very leathery. Many places to sit. We'll see what kind of crowd they attract and how they handle their crowd. Will low-lifes like me have to wait even when they aren't at capacity? We shall see and I wish them well.

Here's a pic:

Monthly alcohol sales for downtown Austin (78701 zipcode) for May, 2009 with a total of $12.9 million in sales for the area. May 2008 was $13.6 million.

My personal notes:

I had no idea Maggie Mae's was doing so well

Eddie V's is always up there, probably due to the amount of wine and higher ASPs

Iron Cactus is the highest on 6th street but I don't really consider them a bar (and I've argued with them about this)

The Ranch has a huge capacity and is very popular on west 6th and I'm not surprised by their number (2 entries because they revised it and remembered how much they really sold, lol)

Blind Pig is the highest of the true bars on 6th

Rain is tops for the gay bars

Many of the places on west 6th are doing very well

Perry's Steakhouse is strong for a newcomer but I expect them to last

Any pure bar below $20k should be on the watch list for closure. Light and Firehouse are my guesses.

And don't forget that since alcohol is taxed at 14% in the bars so drinkers downtown contributed $1.8 million to the government in May!

The Onion Pizza may be pushed out of its location on 5th street by the end of the year.

The Starr Building on the southeast corner of 6th and Colorado was most recently a state office building but has been vacant the last few years. Kemp Management has purchased the building and associated half block. They are considering a parking garage on the 5th street side and the buildings with the now-closed Apple Bar, hot dog place, and Onion may be demolished. I met with Kemp on an unrelated matter.

The folks at the Onion are friendly and it's locally owned so I hope they can find a space close-by to move to.

When I think of the word "lounge" I think of sitting so "ultra-lounge" should be about ultra-sitting. Unfortunately at Pangaea you couldn't sit unless you ordered bottle service. Perhaps I don't really understand what an "ultra-lounge" is. Bottle service isn't always a bad deal if you have a group and consider how much a single drink costs but having your bottle brought out with a sparkler on it so everybody can see that you ordered a bottle is ultra-cheesy to me.

Austin's "ultra-lounge" Pangaea closed after being open less than 2 years. I didn't care that much for the place but I didn't hate it the way some people did. Although I didn't go often because I refuse to wait more than 7 min to get in to any place in Austin. There are so many great places to hang out in Austin so why would I wait to get in when there's a probably a good place right next door? Of course if your friends are inside this can policy can make you look like an anti-social butthead.
But fear not, Pangaea is going to reopen still under Michael Ault's direction according to this
this Statesman blurb.

Let's take a look at Pangaea's alcohol sales:

My favorite is the brisker platter with mac 'n' cheese and waffle fries for $9 (lunch). Doesn't seem to fancy to me but just right, moist brisket. Beer is a bit pricey though.

Nice outside patio and live music.

Walked by Salsarita's last night around 8 and noticed that they weren't open. It seems that many causual or counter restaurants open downtown with hours extending late into the night only to scale back later.

Jimmy John's was open until 3am every night but now only do it on the weekends. Salsarita's just did the same thing.

Texadelphia went from being open until 10pm to being only open for lunch to just closing completely.

I hate that Schlotzky's isn't open at night but I guess I should be glad they are open at all.

Hopefully with more people moving downtown it will make business sense for more of these places to stay open in the evening. As much as I love eating at nice sit down restaurants there are plenty of nights when I just want to take a walk and pick up something quick and easy and there aren't many choices for that downtown. Here's what I see:

Which Wich
Jo's Coffee Shop (awesome burger but pricey w/sides and drink)
Wahoo's Fish Tacos
Rocket's

I'll consider the below after drinking:

all the pizza places: Onion, Hoek's, Paparazzi (good chicken tenders, bad pizza), Roppolo's (worst pizza ever
Fajita cart
Wurst cart (pretty good)
Carl's Hot Dogs (get the relish)
other hot dog guy in alley between Fado and Lucky Lounge

they got rid of the sign on Doggie Style hot dogs showing a dog about to take a shit, I may consider eating one now, depending on how drunk I am

So there isn't much, I think the Subway stays open until 9 or 10 but it sucks. Quizno's closes early. Cozzoli's sold my number to loser (personal finance advisor) and their food is terrible anyway and deserves to stay in the mall.

What else is good and easy downtown?
